Water-Based Wood Coatings
Acrylic emulsions, polyurethane dispersions and functional additives for water-based wood coating systems.
JCT Chemical supplies waterborne acrylic dispersions, hydroxyl-functional acrylics, cationic acrylics, polyurethane and polyurethane-acrylic dispersions, and functional additives for wood primers, sealing primers, topcoats, clear coatings and tinting paints — for furniture and joinery, interior and exterior wood applications.
Water-Based Wood Coatings Require More Than a Binder
The final coating performance depends on the interaction between the polymer, the additives, the substrate, film formation and the application conditions.
A Balance of Properties
Water-based wood coatings need to balance several properties at the same time. Depending on the application, formulators may need to optimize adhesion, hardness, flexibility, scratch resistance, water resistance, transparency, blocking resistance, flow and leveling.
A System, Not a Single Raw Material
Wood is a living substrate: species, moisture content and grain all influence how a waterborne film forms, adheres and ages. Improving one property — for example hardness — often moves another, such as flexibility or water whitening. This page summarizes the polymers, additives and formulation factors involved.
Key Performance Requirements
Typical property balance evaluated when formulating water-based wood coatings.
Adhesion
Strong interaction between the coating film and the wood substrate.
Hardness
Affects surface durability, handling and resistance to mechanical damage.
Flexibility
Helps the coating accommodate movement of the wood substrate.
Scratch Resistance
Supports surface quality during handling, packaging and everyday use.
Water Resistance
Important for protecting the coating film from moisture and water exposure.
Transparency
Critical for clear coatings where the natural wood appearance must remain visible.
Blocking Resistance
Important where coated surfaces come into contact during stacking or handling.
Flow & Leveling
Influences surface appearance, film uniformity and application quality.
Polymer Solutions for Water-Based Wood Coatings
Three complementary technology platforms for wood coating formulations.
Acrylic Emulsions
Suitable acrylic polymer technologies can provide a balance of adhesion, film formation, hardness, flexibility, water resistance and appearance depending on polymer design and formulation. The range includes waterborne acrylic dispersions, hydroxyl-functional acrylics for two-component systems and cationic acrylics.
Polyurethane / PUA / PUD
Polyurethane-based dispersions can be considered when higher levels of durability, hardness, flexibility or resistance are required, depending on the coating system. The range includes PUA hybrids, PUDs and solvent-free UV-curable polyurethane dispersions.
Functional Additives
Dispersants, wetting agents, defoamers and rheology modifiers can influence wetting, dispersion stability, application properties, appearance and final coating performance. Blocked isocyanate crosslinkers can be used to raise resistance levels in acrylic and polyurethane systems.

Final Performance
A successful water-based wood coating is a system rather than a single raw material.
Each step in the chain can strengthen or weaken the next. Substrate condition affects wetting; polymer design sets the property balance; film formation and drying decide whether that balance is actually achieved in the applied film.
Substrate
Wood species, moisture content, surface preparation and porosity can influence coating performance.
Polymer Selection
Polymer design affects the balance between adhesion, hardness, flexibility, water resistance and appearance.
Film Formation
Proper film formation is essential for developing the intended mechanical and barrier properties.
Additives
Additives can influence wetting, dispersion, foam control, rheology and surface appearance.
Drying & Curing
Temperature, humidity, film thickness and drying conditions can affect final coating properties.
